Elis James: Funny Nation

Elis James explores the history of Welsh comedy and meets some of the biggest stand-up comedians, writers and performers the nation has produced. In this first episode, stars such as Rob Brydon, Ruth Jones and Rhod Gilbert discuss the role of stereotypes in comic portrayals of the Welsh and how our relationship to stereotypes has changed over time. Elis also meets some of the new generation of performers who are breaking through and hears about their attitudes towards Welsh cliches in comedy.

Elis James explores the influence of Wales's different performance traditions on the nation's comedy and on its biggest stars. He'll discover the lasting legacy of the popular 70s double act Ryan and Ronnie on some of today's biggest performers; find out how the folk club scene helped produce one of the country's best known comedians, Max Boyce; and see how Welsh stand-up star Rhod Gilbert has inspired a new generation of performers – including the latest winner of the Edinburgh comedy award Jordan Brookes.
