• Data Robotics Drobo: if you can slide a drive into a slot and occasionally glance at great big green, yellow and red LED lights, this USB storage device offers simpler data protection than any RAID device we've ever used. Seriously. No need to mind HD sizes, you can mix and match; you do lose some drive capacity in exchange for the protection. We've been running it for a week, yanking drives out randomly, and so far, we haven't lost anything. It can take a while to rebuild your data after a drive loss, but that's a heck of a lot better than losing it altogether. Drobo is available now, $499 without drives. • Intel's Extreme and Bearlake Chipsets, $199 EeePC, walls of Motherboards, more cases than you could fit in a containership and the world's tallest building? Must be the massive annual hardware gathering that is Computex Taiwan. Patrick used J-B Weld Kwik to fill in the hole where the logo used to be, sanded it down with 220 grit emery paper, filled in any remaining (tiny) holes with Bondo Glazing & Spot Putty, and started sanding with 400 grit paper.
