When Slick receives a knitted woolly hat as a gift from the well-intentioned Newt, he doesn't have the heart to tell her he'll look ridiculous in it. In order to get rid of it, he comes up with the inspired idea that 'accidentally' losing it is not as hurtful as throwing it away. As a result, he embarks on the absurd and funny task of trying to accidentally get rid of it.
