Mouri Kogoro received a letter from a mysterious person called Kurataya Komakichi saying he wanted to give him his family treasure. So, Ran and Conan decided to accompany him to Yamaguchi. The letter said: "I'll be waiting in front of the large fox at the Yuda hot springs Station at 3 PM" signed Kurataya Komakichi. He suddenly exlcaimed himself that he would be rich and woke up the whole train wagon making Ran and Conan a bit uncomfortable. They later arrived at the Shin-Yamaguchi Station and again, Kogoro exclaimed himself that they arrived in Yamaguchi. Because they had plenty of time before the meeting started, they decided to do sightseeing but Kogoro ran into Natsume Asuka, a Yamaguchi news site reporter at Yamaguchi Shimbun and she gave him her business card. When she asked Kogoro why they were in Yamaguchi, he said that they were only sightseeing not mentionning the mysterious letter from Kurataya Komakichi. She asked them to be their tour guide and evidently, the famous detective accepted because she was a beautiful lady. The trip starts when Asuka brings them to Kozan Park telling them that at the Muromachi Period, Yamaguchi was even more prosperous than Kyoto and that people nicknamed it Nishinokyo or the Kyoto of the west and it was where there was the Rurikoji Five-Story Pagoda, one of the three greatests of Japan along with the ones of Hōryū-ji and of Daigo-ji and that the pagoda lights up at night. Then, they went to Chinryutei, the house of the merchant Abe Family where thinkerers such as Saigō Takamori and Kido Takayoshi held secret meetings regarding the Satchō Alliance.Ran added that the room where the thinkers thought was really tiny and Kogoro said that standing in this room made him feel patriotic. Asuka then asked Mori Kogoro what were his plans for the evening and he responded by saying he was meeting someone named Kuataya Komakichi.
