The contest begins at Hampton Court Palace, where host Stephen Mangan is joined by judges, portrait artist Tai Shan Schierenberg, curator Kathleen Soriano and art historian Kate Bryan to assess the efforts of eight competitors. The series prize is a £10,000 commission to paint a landscape in the south of France, a region that has inspired some of the world's greatest painters.
