Younger brother of Louis XVI, he proclaimed himself king after the death of his nephew Louis XVII, on June 8, 1795. He did not become king until April 6, 1814, after the abdication of Napoleon I. When the latter's return was announced, he fled Paris during the night of March 20, 1815.
