The death of the rich ruler of Burgundy sets a dangerous game in motion. He does not have a male heir, so his beautiful and clever daughter Maria has to marry quickly. The King of France and the powerful bourgeoisie are putting pressure on them. Emperor Friedrich needs money for the fight against the Hungarians. His son Maximilian should stop for Maria's hand. When Maria dares to rule alone, she makes the overpowering France an enemy. The unknown Maximilian from the wild East of Europe becomes her last hope.
