So you’d imagine that for football-crazed, sports-mad Brazilians all their Christmases have come at once as they prepare to host the greatest shows on earth, back-to-back. Actually, many of them are pretty conflicted – thrilled the carnivals are coming but angry that so much money is being burned to stage them, while their cost-of-living skyrockets, hospitals and schools crumble and their transport systems cough and splutter in gridlock.
