Ting-Ting does well at her new job and gains both recognition and joy, but she is unable to share these feelings with Yi-Ming. As they argue over Xiao-Zhe's condition, Yi-Ming is deeply affected by the guilt of not being able to leave her child. This familial relationship makes Ting-Ting feel more and more like an outsider.
