Commissioner Adamsberg travels to the Camargue to continue his investigation. He feels lost. He misses something he does not see. Is the recluse a woman or a beast? He learns that Irene has a roommate, Louise, who is afraid of spiders and men. He asks Lieutenant Froissy to research her and visit her. The policewoman discovers her true identity and that of Irène.
