In this first heat, nine artists create portraits while Kathleen Soriano, Tai Shan Schierenberg and Kate Bryan judge. There's everything to play for as the winner will receive a £10,000 prize commission to paint Cuban ballet icon, Carlos Acosta, for the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
