These homeowners loved their big open floor plan until they tried to make the rooms work. The large empty space is transformed into a proper entryway, dining room and living room area, each with its own identity. Wall-to-wall carpet is replaced with polished dyed concrete; the dining room is raised and steps are built to create an elegant eat-in area; and a ventless fireplace is added to the living room along with a custom-made water feature. Shoji screen doors are built and hung on a rail system to differentiate the spaces.
