Calabria, late 1960s. To pay off his debts, the Saggese family must agree to a proxy marriage. To sacrifice herself is Maria, who agrees to the wedding with the Vicenza farmer Vittorio Bassi, thus giving up her roots and the hope of reuniting with her first love, Antonio, who has left for Belgium. Maria, however, discovers that her husband will not be Vittorio her but her nephew, Italo, who rejects her when she arrives in the North, still too upset by the disappearance of his wife Giorgia into thin air.

The body found is that of Giorgia, Italo's first wife. The autopsy clears him of the murder charge, but it also destroys all his hopes of seeing her return. The man, out of pain, tries an extreme gesture, but Maria manages to dissuade him. During the funeral, Italo learns that Vittorio had tricked his deceased wife's family and, in a fit of rage against his uncle, beats him and leaves the farmhouse. With Vittorio confined to bed and Italo disappeared into thin air, Maria has to manage everything, but she proves to be very capable and even manages to improve the conditions of the laborers.

Maria understood that her life is in the north, next to Paolino and her husband, to whom she finally managed to really get close. The two carry on their projects together, but the difficulties are not over: Antonio returns to meddle in Maria's life and, relying on his position, tries to distance her from her husband, from whom the woman is expecting a child. But a tragedy, the greatest of her, is about to hit her.
