In the early hours of the morning, 180 men of the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry Battalion of the Sixth Airborne Division, known as The Red Devils, parachute into their sector of Normandy and, to the tremendous surprise of the Germans, capture Pegasus Bridge over the Caen Canal in Bénouville, a strategic point for the success of the landing operations.
