Monty tries to raise funds to publish his research on walking trails and enlists the help of artist Steve Burguess. As Christmas approaches, he takes ceilidh lessons and indulges in a bit of wildlife watching, before celebrating the festive season with a dip in the sea and dinner with friends, and learning that the local ranger committee has decided to take on board his recommendations to employ a permanent ranger.
