Cathy Phillips, a 16-year-old schoolgirl, sensitive and highly strung, is fearful of her stepfather who mistreats her both physically and psychologically. A social worker has Cathy placed in her care, much against Maddern's wishes, but the situation backfires on her when Cathy runs away and is revealed as a definite suicide risk.
