Chuck Close has reinvigorated the traditional medium of portrait painting. Working from photographs and primarily within a large-scale, gridded format of meticulously crafted colored marks, Close makes iconographic images of family, friends, and self-portraits that push the limits of portraiture. Close has been the subject of one-person exhibitions at theMuseum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and many other museums and galleries around the world.
