The son of PD Frank Taylor is abducted and never found. Two years later, Frank's marriage to his wife Jessica has broken down and they are now divorced. Frank is sent on a case of another abducted child, but during a skermish with a suspect named Simon (who Frank is forced to kill to save himself) Frank is left on the brink of death. Following his recovery, he learns that he can receive messages from beyond the grave, from kind spirits who wish to help him solve his cases. But the spirit of the man he killed, Simon, will stop at nothing to make sure some of these messages never reach Frank...

A woman comes to Frank to find her boyfriend who was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Frank checks himself into the hospital using the premise that he is delusional and seeing ghosts. Frank's self-portrait of "inner demons" draws the attention of a woman being institutionalized against her will. She and Frank follow clues that Frank is getting from the apparent victim of the fire while trying to evade the tyrannical doctor in charge of treatment.
