Returning from a business trip, Furuhata catches a cold and stays overnight in a village to recuperate. While there, a woman named Kusakabe Kaoruko (Ameku Michiko) is recognized by the village as the woman who defrauded them of a large sum of money. The village chief Kaemon Araki (Tatsuo Matsumura) kills her with a katana and the rest of the villagers erase Kaoruko's existence to protect him. Imaizumi, who had fallen in love with Kaoruko the night before, desperately searches for her
