On August 9, 1942, the "death match" was played, a football match which pitted FC Start (Ukrainian players) against Flakelf, the football team of the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) . This match, which took place in Ukraine, a territory then occupied by Nazi Germany, became a legend that served the propaganda of the USSR after the Second World War.
