Isabel and her three children, Socorro, Raphael, and Regina, get on a bus to Manila to start a new life, but tragedy strucks their family before they could even make it. Years later, Socorro is renamed as Esperanza, the adopted daughter of Celia and Raul, and Regina is renamed Cecille, the adopted daughter of the town's corrupt mayor. The two sisters clash at school.
