His best friend had to flee quickly and his love for a young Jewish woman broke. Sebastian Haffner was less and less able to escape the vortex of terror and seduction. His life became a dangerous balancing act between adaptation and rejection. Haffner (then Raimund Pretzel) emigrated to London in 1938.
