Our adventurer begins his journey in Venice, just like Marco Polo, the most famous voyager to have proceeded down this ancient route.
The many cultural influences are immediately obvious: The architecture and the mosaics of St Mark’s Basilica reveal the links that connect this city with the distant lands of Asia; the textile maker Alberto Bevilacqua recounts the history of the silk trade, while a restaurant owner passionate about gastronomy explains the varied origins of Venetian cuisine.
Alfred then shows us a little-known treasure: the Armenian monastery’s library. It is packed with manuscripts in all languages, brought there through the Silk Road.

The caravanserai at Aksaray is a perfect example of architecture of the Seljuq dynasty, the first empire in the region starting in the 10th century. Then the history and arts specialist Ahmet Diler accompanies Alfred on a visit to the legendary region of Cappadocia, with its “fairy chimneys”, troglodyte dwellings and churches with walls covered in lapis lazuli. By studying the motifs in the famous kilim rugs, Ahmet and Alfred reveal the identity and history of the peoples of Cappadocia, who played a major role on the Silk Road.

Between the Dunhuang oasis’ dunes, our guide meets a woman camel breeder. The oasis has become a popular tourist spot but its fragile ecosystem has to be protected. The valley of the 1000 Buddhas stretches outwards from the edge of Dunhuang. This extraordinary archaeological site comprises no fewer than 492 caves, with cave-paintings dating from the fourth to the fourteenth century. One cave contains a 36 meters tall statue of Buddha – the biggest Buddha recorded in the history of China.

He comes by stylist Fan Yanyan’s studio and visits the great mosque of Xi’an - the oldest in China - in the neighbourhood inhabited by the Muslim Hui minority. Ideas and religions travelled the Silk Road as well as valuable goods: Professor Yue Yu tells Alfred the story of Xuan Chang, a seventh-century sage who went on a sixteen-year journey to India and brought back the core texts of Buddhism.
Our guide ends his journey with a visit to the tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor to rule over a unified China. His terracotta army looks as if it is standing guard over him, ensuring he remains undisturbed for all eternity.
