The railway network in Tunisia is not widespread, but who decides to explore this North African country by train will experience a wealth of experience. The route leads through Tunis Souse, El Jem and Sfax to the cavemen and desert nomads around Gabez, where the desert has started. It is a journey through tangible and often beautifully restored memories of the Roman period in the first centuries after Christ. Start and end forms a fascinating contrast. Tunis as Islamist metropolis with western influences is totally different than the endpoint Gabez that still offers pristine African culture.
