Deep in the deserts of Idaho sits a giant box. It was made for nuclear science. It’s the most radioactive room on Earth. It’s Idaho National Laboratory’s Hot Fuel Examination Facility. I peered through its leaded windows in June, 2024. This is what I saw, and why.
