Their relationship began with a misunderstanding, where Marinette thought Adrien was a mean boy—just like his best friend, Chloé. But she soon realizes that Chloé is only Adrien’s friend because their fathers are close, and she’s the only girl his age he’s ever spent time with. Once Marinette understands that Adrien is actually kind and not used to interacting with kids his age, she falls in love with him without even realizing it. From that moment on, something strange happens to Marinette: she can’t speak to Adrien without stammering. Adrien always remembers that initial misunderstanding, thinking Marinette is uncomfortable around him. He constantly tries to prove he can be a good friend.
