Chris Colorado proposes to attack Chichen-Itza in force, which Thanatos holds. Richard Julian asks him to go first to the Forbidden Zone (deserted by the Thanors) and to bring Sam an armored can of Black Torrent. Everything goes wrong, the Thanors have set a trap and Colorado, separated from Chippowok, escapes into the rift leading to the Mosaics. The Mosaics, with their pale faces in their underground world, are very threatening. A "Hermit", his face hidden by a hood, leads Chris Colorado to his lair and subjects him to three tests.
