Experiencing abroad not just like on vacation, going to school like in American films - spending a year abroad as a student is a big dream for many people. A dream that usually requires a five-figure payment to be fulfilled. In this research, three former exchange students tell how their dream of a year abroad turned into a nightmare: through living in dirty apartments, with armed host parents and psychological pressure from people they actually trusted. These stories are exemplary of many cases in our research that can be traced back to the same structural deficiencies in the organization of such stays. What are they and who is responsible for them?
