On February 13, 1960, France detonated its first nuclear bomb in the Algerian Sahara Desert. It became the fourth world power to possess atomic weapons. For 36 years, from 1960 to 1996, France conducted more than 200 nuclear tests, from the confines of the Sahara Desert in Algeria to the idyllic atolls of Polynesia. These tests were conducted in the greatest secrecy and punctuated by serious accidents. It took more than half a century for the secret documents to finally be revealed.
