We are European champions in blood consumption. In Germany we use so much donor blood that supplies are constantly running out - even though around 1.9 million liters of blood are collected through donations every year. As a result, they say we should donate even more. But research by Ute Jurkovics and Tine Seidemann shows that we could also get by with less. We follow the blood from donation to heart surgery – and to the pharmaceutical industry. Why do we need all this blood? Where do we waste it?
