Roman and Abe make a breakthrough: they find Marlena's date book and private therapy tapes among Stella's belongings. Tracing Donna Welsh's forwarded number leads them to a recently demolished warehouse. In an underground pit, John and Marlena have lost hope as bulldozers approach. After an emotional goodbye where they express gratitude for being together, John creates a smoke signal by burning clothes. Roman spots the smoke and realizes someone is trapped below. They discover a trapdoor and rescue both, though John watches sadly as Marlena falls into Roman's arms, a bittersweet moment revealing lingering feelings.
