Lawrence opens the crate, revealing a coffin filled with sand—proof Forrest didn’t drown and is alive as John Black. Watching from the security room, John grows frustrated and later intercepts Carrie at Fisherman’s Village, warning her to stay away from Lawrence. She returns anyway and kisses Lawrence, who stays evasive. Jack adopts an unnervingly cheerful attitude, wearing a smiley button and singing despite the Spectator’s looming takeover. Jennifer and Vern are alarmed. Jack invites Lisanne to dinner to show her their “desperate” life, but she praises their love and simplicity instead. After she leaves, Jennifer erupts, begging Jack to stop the forced sincerity and be himself again.
