Gillian’s expose backfires when Vaughn retaliates with a smear article claiming she seduced him and then Shane. Marlena wants to resume normal life, but Roman insists she can’t go anywhere alone while Orpheus is free; she agrees to full protection. Max slips away to find Steve. On the pier, Steve demands Kayla return the emeralds; she denies it. Warren gives Steve two hours to produce them, unaware Adrienne is tailing him. Kim shows Roman the smear piece; he urges her to see Shane. She arrives just as Shane comforts Gillian and angrily accuses them of deserving each other. Warren corners Steve under the pier and stabs him; Adrienne witnesses it. Roman helps Marlena admit she’s not ready to be apart from him. He suggests a family ski trip to their honeymoon lodge, and she begins to believe things will be alright.
