On the roadside, Monjirō encounters a dying man who begs him to deliver two letters. Upon visiting the first address, Monjirō is invited to stay. The deceased man is revealed to be a relative of someone Monjirō had once killed, and the household belongs to his kin. Seizing an opportunity, the family attacks Monjirō, but he outmaneuvers and kills them. Honoring the man’s final wish, Monjirō disappears into the rainy haze of Jizō Pass to deliver the second letter.
