When the trailer for The Orville was announced, I was slightly confused, then you see Seth McFarlane starring in it and I was automatically intrigued. Star Trek Discovery was on the horizon and this was Fox's way to compete in the same genre.
Of course, this isn't the case at all, afterall, this show stars Seth McFarlane. The creator of Family Guy is a genius and brings a certain style of comedy that is difficult to replicate.
What is Orville? It's a Star Trek like space comedy starring Seth McFarlane as Captain Ed Mercer. Captain Mercer commands the USS Orville to deliver supplies to another sector of the galaxy.
The reviews from critics has been terrible, but these could be the same people that just isn't a fan of Seth McFarlane comedies. With that out of the way, I am a fan of Seth, FOX also has enough faith in him as he has had a show cancelled, come back, then given two other animated comedies and has found a place in a few movies. Seth makes money for FOX and he entertains us.
I enjoy the Orville. The fun adventures of the crew and the colourful mix of characters make up for an interesting crew that is easy to understand. Unfortunately, what didn't work is some of the punchlines or gags. The usual raunchy out of this world slapstick that many Family Guy fans are familiar with doesn't quite belong in the Orville, thus some of the jokes seems flat and out of place. Awkward to say the least. There are some light hearted more "earth related" references the show will make that do work, that is the real charm of the Orville.
Whether you find this offensive as a Star Trek fan, or enjoy light hearted adventure comedies, give The Orville a watch and don't write this off as a bad rip off just yet. The show has yet to find it's place and it could a few more episodes.
